Frequently Asked Questions

Video Painter is a MIDI and audio-triggered visual performance tool for musicians, VJs, live artists, and educators. Connect a MIDI controller or microphone and trigger transparent HAP videos, ISF shaders, 3D objects, and image sequences in real time (no coding required). Available on Mac and Windows.

Most VJ tools are built around node graphs, clip launchers, or complex routing setups that take time to learn. Video Painter is designed to be plug-and-play from the first minute. Just connect a MIDI device or microphone (or use your computer keyboard) and you're performing immediately. It's also one of the only tools that treats transparent HAP-encoded video as a native library type triggered directly by MIDI or audio, with no compositing workarounds. And unlike subscription-based tools, you buy it once and own it.

HAP is a family of GPU-accelerated video codecs designed for high-performance playback in real-time applications. The HAP Alpha variant supports transparency (like ProRes 4444 or GIF, but far more efficient at high resolutions), making it ideal for layering visuals over live camera feeds, other software, or a dark background during performance. Video Painter uses HAP because it can play back multiple transparent video clips simultaneously with low CPU overhead, something standard video formats like H.264 can't do reliably in a live context.

Video Painter is used by a wide range of people: VJs and live visual performers who need a reliable MIDI-driven tool on stage; musicians and electronic artists who want their synthesizers and controllers to drive visuals; multimedia artists creating interactive installations; filmmakers using it to generate real-time footage; educators running AV and digital arts programs; and curious beginners who just want to plug something in and see what happens. The LITE edition is ideal for hobbyists and students; PRO is built for working artists who need customization and commercial use.

Yes. Since Video Painter responds to standard MIDI, it works seamlessly with Ableton Live (as well as other DAWs like Logic Pro). You can route MIDI from Ableton to Video Painter using a virtual MIDI bus (like IAC Driver on Mac or loopMIDI on Windows), allowing clips, scenes, or automation in your Ableton session to trigger and control visuals in real time. This makes it a natural fit for producers who perform live with Ableton and want a visual layer that's in sync with their music.

Video Painter is software that allows you to easily plug in a MIDI device (or microphone) and produce responsive visuals from a variety of visual libraries and effects. It does not generate audio itself, rather it's a visual system. It was created by Canadian artist/developer Strange Process.

Don't stress, we'll get this sorted out for you. Here are some things to go through first:
  1. Double check your spam folders to make sure you didn't get any emails from Lemon Squeezy
  2. Occasionally, people enter a typo when they enter their email address. Try sending yourself a magic login link to the address you think you used: https://app.lemonsqueezy.com/my-orders/login
  3. If the above step doesn't work, you may have made a typo. Don't fret, just email support@videopainter.ca. I will help you resolve the issue and get you Video Painting as soon as possible.

Mac: macOS 10.15 or later (Intel or Apple silicon). We recommend a Mac with dedicated graphics card for best performance, though it will run on integrated graphics at lower resolutions. At least 8GB RAM is recommended, with 16GB+ ideal for complex visual setups.

Windows: 10 (64-bit) or later | 4GB RAM | 1GB Disk Space | OpenGL 3.3 compatible graphics card.

The amount of required memory can depend on the size of your visual libraries and effects being applied.

LITE is perfect for casual hobbyists and children and includes 12 built-in visual libraries with effects.

PRO comes with 25 visual libraries, and the ability to import custom libraries. It also includes full commercial use rights, and unlocks all features including: Custom MIDI mapping, importing/exporting patches, 'Wallpaper mode' effect for video and PNG libraries. If your project is used to make money (live visuals, monetized streaming or YouTube videos, making music videos, interactive installations, and so on), you require a PRO licence.

Yes! Since we just launched, I am currently supporting upgrades manually. Email support@videopainter.ca with your order number (subject line: UPGRADE), and I will send you a discounted upgrade link for the current price of PRO minus what you paid for LITE.

Both LITE and PRO licenses allow activation on up to 2 devices. You can deactivate devices through the File menu or your Lemon Squeezy account dashboard to free up activation slots.

Stay tuned! While there is an outline in our User Manual (it comes bundled with the software), video tutorials will be rolling out over time on how to make different library types.

Yes! PRO version includes full MIDI mapping and learn functionality. Connect any class-compliant USB MIDI controller and map parameters to knobs, faders, and buttons. MIDI mapping is a PRO-only feature. Our 'hitching mode' makes mapping any parameter to MIDI sliders and knobs a breeze, and you can save and share custom mappings.

PRO users can import custom libraries with their own content. The app currently supports four library types: Video (HAP), PNG, 3D (OBJ), and Shaders (ISF). LITE users have access to 12 built-in visual libraries but cannot import custom content.

Not at this moment. The most affordable way to try Video Painter is the LITE edition ($18 USD, one-time purchase), which includes 12 visual libraries and 9 built-in patches, and can be upgraded to PRO later for the price difference.

Yes! PRO version includes Syphon output support, allowing you to stream your visuals to other macOS apps like Resolume, MadMapper, VDMX, and OBS. This is a PRO-only feature.

OBS's experimental Metal renderer doesn't subscribe to Syphon sources. Switch OBS back to OpenGL under Settings → Advanced → Video → Renderer.

This is a limitation of OBS, not Video Painter.

Yes! As of v1.1.1 Video Painter is now available on both Mac and Windows!

Commercial use rights are included with the PRO license. LITE is for personal/hobbyist use only. If you're performing at venues, events, or creating content for clients, you'll need the PRO license.

Patches are saved snapshots of your complete visual setup including all parameters, effects, and settings. Video Painter has 99 bank slots. Save with 's + [0-9]' and load with 'l + [0-9]' for instant visual changes during performances.

You can deactivate devices from the File menu in Video Painter, or manage activations through your Lemon Squeezy account dashboard at lemonsqueezy.com. Each license allows 2 active devices, so you can deactivate your old computer and activate your new one.

As of now Video Painter doesn't record directly, however there are several great capture methods.

1. OBS is a free screen recording software that works great for capturing Video Painter output. Ensure you set your recording options to high quality capture. You could record the application window or use the Syphon/Spout input option.

2. If you have access to a hardware monitor/recorder, such as a Atomos Ninja Monitor Recorder, those provide excellent quality recordings.

3. Additionally, you can get creative and try filming your content off of a screen - for example an old CRT or LCD monitor for different looks and textures. Every camera and every screen combination will result in a different look.

Performance will vary based on 3 main factors: your computer specs (largely available memory), file size of the library you are working with, and the complexity of effects (in particular GLSL shaders).

Step 1) Improve your memory: reboot your machine and close any non-essential apps.

Step 2) Start with a default library, or further experiment with optimizing size of your custom library. Reduce size and/or number of clips in a library.

Step 3) Tweak settings: reduce FPS under Control Freak settings.

Best place is our Discord channel over at #feature-requests! Thanks for your feedback.

I have a specific educational/non-profit version of the app I will be making available to organizations that fit the criteria. You will receive a 50% off discount for approved requests. You can make a request by filling out this form. I review all requests manually, so please allow as much as 2-3 business days for a response. The educational version does not come with a commercial usage licence. Examples we love to support:
  • Running and teaching an Audio/Visual club at your school
  • Therapy for adults with developmental disabilities
  • Art therapy at youth mental health non-profits

That's both not a question, and totally expected behaviour. Ensure you restock his snack supply accordingly.
